Does the DVA cover the costs of Natural Therapy treatment?

Yes, the DVA does consider funding the costs of plant therapy treatment for many predetermined conditions such as chronic pain.

What conditions are patients eligible for natural therapy through VeteranCare?

We are currently accepting patients who are experiencing chronic pain.

What if I don’t have pain listed as a DVA-accepted condition on my healthcare status?

If you do suffer from chronic pain and/or injury and do not have this listed as a DVA-accepted condition then we can assist you with the application process to have your healthcare status updated through our in-house advocate program. This process can take up to 6 weeks however it will then allow you to continue the path towards fully funded treatment.

Does the DVA provide funding for mental health conditions?

No. A range of mental health conditions (e.g. PTSD) have been funded previously. Nowadays, the DVA is no longer providing funding for mental health conditions.

What is the DVA’s framework for funding natural therapy treatment?

To obtain funding approval, the condition requiring treatment must be chronic (last more than 3 months), and standard treatments must have proven unsuccessful in managing it.To support the application, a written endorsement from the treating pain specialist overseeing the treatment is necessary. Additionally, a suicide and mental health risk assessment is conducted to ensure that there is no elevated risk of suicidal ideation or mental health issues, particularly in cases where potential contraindications are advised. Furthermore, confirmation must be provided stating that the patient does not currently have a substance use disorder and exhibits a low risk for developing one.The support letter is submitted along with an Authorised Prescriber’s approval letter as part of the application to the DVA.But don’t worry – we handle all applications on your behalf.

How do I book an appointment with a doctor?

All you need to do is fill out the Health Evaluation Form here. You can select your consultation time once you’ve completed your form. The doctor will assess the answers from your form and contact you at the scheduled time to discuss and determine eligibility. You will then be referred to one of our partnered authorised pain specialists to finalise review and facilitate a support letter to proceed with your application to the DVA for funding.

What’s the process to get DVA cover for natural therapies with VeteranCare?
  1. Consultation with a VeteranCare doctor.
  2. Referral to one of our partner pain specialists for review.
  3. Follow-up consultation with the pain specialist, with a support letter to be provided upon eligibility to support your application to the DVA.
  4. Pain specialist support letter and other supporting documentation submitted to the DVA.
How much does it cost to get started?

Getting started with VeteranCare is $0. Unlike others, we do not charge for initial doctors consultations or application fees as we believe everyone deserves to have access to the best care.We have built our platform to guarantee we act as the most affordable in providing plant-based therapies and ongoing care to those eligible.

Does the process differ between White Card, Gold Card and Orange Card holders?

Yes. Gold and Orange Cards cover the costs of RPBS prescriptions for all conditions. If you are a White Card holder, we would need to review the accepted conditions for which you can receive treatment for, which can be located on your myGov app.

Once the DVA has approved funding for my treatment, do I need to continue seeing the doctor when I need a repeat filled?

Once you have been approved by the DVA to have your costs of medication covered, there will be no need to submit any further applications for ongoing treatment if you are happy with your prescribed treatment plan.

Should there be a need for change or an update to your treatment plan, you will need to have another application submitted to the DVA for funding approval. Although, you can continue with your existing previously approved treatment plan whilst waiting for approval on your application for an updated treatment plan.

Do I have to wait for DVA approval for funding before I can commence treatment?
